The Dictionary of Ulster Biography, compiled by Kate Newmann, was published in 1993 by The Institute of Irish Studies, Queens University of Belfast. The Dictionary is a natural database for the work of the The Ulster History Circle. The Circle has purchased the copyright and has placed the Dictionary on the World Wide Web as a resource to the Circle and also to those interested in local and regional history and biography.
The Dictionary has been fully indexed and entries are linked where appropriate. To find an entry, select the first letter of the surname. There is a location index (not linked to the Dictionary entries) which facilitates a quick search for the names associated with a City or County. For this use the Location Index below.
The Ulster History Circle aims, through the erection of blue plaques, to honour men and women, connected with the province of Ulster, who have made a significant contribution to the fields of industry, commerce, literature, arts, science, engineering and other professional endeavours, philanthropy or voluntary activity. As a general rule, blue plaques are erected after the person has been dead for at least 20 years, less if born 100 or more years ago.
An existing blue plaque is indicated by a in the name index.
The intention is to update and augment the Dictionary over the next few years. To help with this the Circle is inviting contributions to the Dictionary and will seek to involve local schools, as well as local historical and community groups and others, in the selection of suitable candidates and the preparation of biographical material. All contributions are welcome. For the Dictionary, the Circle's 20 year rule does not apply.
